One of my ideas that I am interested in investigating is the play off of sand dollars and shells as currency. The culture that would use this would all be made up of mermaids and merman's. Having glass jewelry for a mermaid would be symbolic of the sea glass found on the shores which they will never be able to walk and the combination of shell shaped pieces that make the connection to their home in the sea. Each piece being completely unique, special and desirable. For each bead found on this piece of jewelry the value would increase by a value of ten depending on the varying size increase.

According to Wikipedia Slave beads where used to trade others for services and goods all around the world. These beads are highly decorated and very beautiful. Chevron beads are made from glass and where used during the slave trades in Africa. Ornate fabrics have also been used as a form of currency. Many handmade objects have been used as currency because of there value.

I am excited to see you visual language with the idea of the sand dollars and sea creature- Try to really explore the possibilities through images you find. Try to go beyond just imitating the shell or sea glass- be inspired by it- to make something new. Be careful the pieces don't get to "little mermaidish".
